B-BOYS AND B-GIRLS ACROSS THE GLOBE!
Pubic hair refers to those hairs that grow in the frontal genital area, the crotch and sometimes at the top of the inside of the legs. These areas of the body form the pubic region. In both men and women, pubic hairs are usually darker and coarser than the scalp hair. However, some people may have sparser or finer pubic hair. The texture of pubic hair varies in individuals from tightly curled to entirely straight. The pattern of pubic hair can also vary by race and ethnicity.
How pubic hair develops in men and women?
Pubic hair develops in men and women during adolescence, a transitional stage from childhood to adulthood. The onset of pubic hair development is termed ‘pubarche’. Before the onset of puberty, the genital area of both boys and girls has very fine vellus hair. However, during the onset of puberty, the body starts producing rising levels of the sex hormones known as androgens. Because of this, the skin of the genital area begins to produce thicker, coarser and often curlier hair with a faster growth rate.
In boys, at first a few sparse pubic hairs appear on the scrotum or at the upper base of the penis. Within a year, pubic hairs around the base of the penis become denser. In 3 to 4 years, hair fills the pubic area and becomes much thicker and darker. Pubic hair develops near thighs and upwards on the abdomen toward the umbilicus by the end of 5 years.
In most girls, pubic hair first appears along the edges of the labia majora and spreads forward to the mons over the next 2 years. By 3 years into puberty (menstruation starts for most girls around this time), the pubic triangle is densely filled with hairs. In another 2 years time, pubic hair develops near the thighs and sometimes a small amount up the line of the abdomen toward the umbilicus.
Functions of pubic hair
Pubic hair is said to serve following functions:
•Providing warmth - protecting vital reproductive organs from cold
•Gathering of secreted pheromones
•Reducing external friction during sexual intercourse
•Protecting the sensitive pubic area
•Indicating sexual maturity
